Why did you choose the Soho House Group for your placement?

I chose to do my placement at the Soho House Group after hearing about its reputation; the fact that it was expanding; and the exciting opportunities it had to offer. I also liked the idea of working with staff and customers who are creative and allow you to express your creative side too. With Soho House running a graduate training scheme I also felt that doing my placement here would help me on my way to learning the ins and outs of becoming a manager.

I work at Shoreditch House as a waiter; I am doing an 11 month placement and have been working there for 4 months. I mostly work in the evenings from 6pm until close (which varies everyday). We have a staff meeting at six, where we discuss who is working where and events that are happening that evening. We also have some menu knowledge questions; this helps and encourages us to become more knowledgably about our products. What I like is that you often find yourself working in different parts of the house which makes you much more flexible and in tune with the goings on of the club.

What do you like about working for the Soho House Group?

The best things about working for the Soho House Group is the new challenges you encounter everyday, the other employees, and the interesting costumers. It’s also a great place to learn from the more experienced waiters and managers; everyone is willing to help one another out when things get tough. The atmosphere in the houses is also very relaxed and we have a lot of fun!

Why did you choose the Soho House Group for your placement?

I chose the Soho House Group to do my placement because of its uniqueness. In the hospitality industry you often find that hotels and restaurants offer the same kind of service, and rarely look different from each other. London is well known for its large amount of private members clubs, and I find them much more exciting to work for – you are seen as a person rather than just a waiter. I also liked the relaxed nature of the Soho House Group, you can build up a rapport with regular members and become on first name terms. Work is not easy but I’ve learnt so much over the past year and I am still working for them with great joy!

I started working for the company in August 2010; it was my first experience abroad. I worked as a food runner in Shoreditch House to begin with, then after two months I became a waiter. I worked there for 6 months until I was offered a position as pool boy on the amazing roof top pool; this was great because I got to walk around in the sun wearing shorts and sunglasses! Shoreditch House has given me so much more than an internship, and since completing my placement they have given me a permanent position. I started doing this last October and I still go to work with a smile on my face.

What do you like about working for the Soho House Group?

The best thing about working for the Soho House Group is the opportunities it gives you. If you work hard and give it some time, you will be rewarded for all your hard work. For me personally I love to work with relaxed, chilled out guests who you can always have a friendly chat to.
